As many scholars\, activists\, artists\, and community members are working around indigenous questions inside an indigenization paradigm\, most of them hold the necessity to be immersed in very specific topics which sometimes prevent them to establish further connections. The Latin American Studies program at UC San Diego holds a strategic dimension where it sources itself from a large variety of faculties\, thus many different perspectives as well as opening the door to Latin America. Despite modern Americas being more and more limited by its physical and intellectual borders\, we aspire to create a safe space to exchange\, reconnect\, and honor indigeneity. It is also important to work with Indigenous and Native communities\, local and abroad to ensure that a possible film festival reflects their concerns and interests and that it is organized in a responsible and respectful manner. We are actively looking to associate with organizations and community groups to promote this initiative and support outreach efforts within the community.”

SUMMARY:UCSD Holocaust Remembrance Day: Rose Schindler
DESCRIPTION:We’re honored to host Rose Schindler for Shabbat during International Holocaust Remembrance Day. \nJoin us to hear Rose’s story\, Friday\, January 27th from 6-8 PM.\nGlickman Hillel Center\n9009 La Jolla Scenic Drive North. \nThe event is open to UCSD students from all faiths and backgrounds\, and to all Hillel of San Diego students. \nShabbat dinner will be served. \nAbout Rose:\nAt 14 years old\, Rose Schindler was stuffed in a cattle car full of other Jews. She traveled several days without water\, food\, or access to a toilet. She was brought to Aushwitz\, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp. During the war\, she lost her mother and her four younger siblings. Her older brother was sent to a slave labor camp. After a brief reunification with her father in Aushwitz\, she never saw him again. During this brief interaction\, her father told Rose to “… survive and tell the world what they’re doing to us.” \nRose’s memoir\, “Two Who Survived: Keeping Hope Alive While Surviving the Holocaust”\, was published in 2019. The book follows Max and Rose from childhood\, through the their incomprehensible experiences in concentration camps\, and then navigating a new world and forming what both had lost\, a family. \nRose knows that as a child-survivor\, she is among the few capable of sharing a first-hand account of the Holocaust\, and she remains determined to continue to share her story and give others the incomparable opportunity to meet a survivor

SUMMARY:A talk from Adrian Martin "Making Audiovisual Essays: A Film Critic’s Tale"
DESCRIPTION:Since 2012\, I have been heavily involved with making audiovisual essays – you may also see them referred to variously as video essays\, online essays or videographic criticism – in close collaboration with my partner\, montage wizard Cristina Álvarez López. In fact\, we do at least one every month\, thanks to our online series The Thinking Machine running since 2016 in the Dutch magazine de Filmkrant – we have just made our 65th installment there. An audiovisual essay\, put very simply\, is a way for Cristina & I to reflect – playfully\, poetically\, sometimes analytically\, sometimes cryptically – on our ongoing experience of cinema: a film\, a moment\, a group or genre of movies\, an idea\, an echo across screens … You might think we are part of a ‘video essay movement’ right now in many parts of the world but\, in general\, we keep to ourselves. For me as for Cristina\, this audiovisual practice is a tributary experience flowing away from and back into what we each did for years before 2012\, and what we still do all the time: writing film criticism\, whether in journalistic\, essayistic or academic modes. So\, where do audiovisuality and writing sit in relation to each other for us today? \nAdrian Martin is a freelance film/arts critic and audiovisual essayist based in Malgrat de Mar (Spain). He is the author of ten books on cinema and popular culture\, including Mysteries of Cinema (University of Western Australia Publishing\, 2020)\, Mise en scène and Film Style (Palgrave\, 2014) and the forthcoming Filmmakers Thinking (San Sebastián: EQZE\, 2023). He is Adjunct Professor of Film and Media Studies at Monash University (Australia)\, and gives an annual seminar at EQZE film school (Spain). His ongoing archive website\, covering 45 years of writing\, is at
